New characters (5 at launch, 10 after major updates) are unlocked by completing challenges (either by clearing a zone for the first time or reaching a certain milestone), with each character having different statistics and\/or gameplay differences; the player starts only with Göll who is well-balanced but lacks particular specialties, while some examples of the unlockable characters are Njord who is restricted only to using his magic hands as a weapon, Odr who has unique flying capabilities but dies from a single shot, Rún who starts with statistics randomized every time she is selected, and more.
