Gran Turismo 7 is a single-player and multiplayer racing simulation game. The game places the player in the role of a driver and car collector who progresses through a wide range of events, licenses, and championships while building a personal garage of vehicles. Its structure mixes career-style progression with open-ended driving options, presenting both a narrative of advancement and a broad toolset for motorsport experimentation.
The central mode is the GT Café, which organizes the player's journey through themed "menu books" that set objectives such as collecting certain models or winning specific championships. Completing these unlocks new cars, tracks, and progression milestones. Beyond the Café, the World Map hub offers direct access to dealerships, tuning shops, license tests, and circuits. This structure reflects the traditional Gran Turismo series career format, combining guided progression with freedom of choice.
Races simulate real-world motorsport rules. Vehicles vary from compact hatchbacks to high-performance race cars, each accurately modeled in terms of handling, weight, aerodynamics, and engine characteristics. Weather and time-of-day systems affect track conditions dynamically, requiring adjustments in strategy and driving style. Players compete against AI opponents or human drivers, with race outcomes influenced by both driving skill and car performance.
Progression is tied to car acquisition and customization. Cars can be purchased from Brand Central, used dealerships, or earned as rewards, then tuned with parts that adjust power, handling, and efficiency. Vehicles can also be painted and visually modified with a livery editor. The player's collection grows into a garage that can be revisited for performance upgrades or aesthetic changes, making car management a major component of the experience.
Secondary systems expand beyond racing. License tests teach advanced driving techniques through scenario-based challenges, while missions provide unique race formats such as drag events or endurance runs. Music Rally adds arcade-style races set to timed songs. Online multiplayer includes both casual lobbies and structured Sport Mode races with matchmaking based on performance and driver conduct. Daily races and tournaments are also featured, encouraging long-term competitive play.
The game emphasizes presentation and education as well as competition. The GT Café's commentary provides historical context on car design and manufacturers, and Scapes mode allows players to stage detailed photo shoots of their vehicles across real-world backgrounds.
Cross-platform play is supported between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions, and progress can transfer between systems. The PS5 edition adds features such as advanced haptic feedback and faster loading, though the core structure remains identical across platforms.
