Super Mario Maker 2 is a single-player and multiplayer platform game and level creation system. The game does not follow a traditional story, but it provides a framework where players either build their own Super Mario stages or play through levels designed by others. In addition to the main creative tools, the game includes a Story Mode where Mario helps rebuild Princess Peach's castle by completing pre-made stages designed to showcase the possibilities of the editor.

Core gameplay revolves around two distinct modes: Course Maker and Course World. In Course Maker, players assemble levels by placing blocks, enemies, power-ups, and terrain features on a grid. Stages can be built in five different visual styles drawn from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario 3D World. Each style determines available mechanics and objects, such as the cape feather in Super Mario World or clear pipes in Super Mario 3D World.

Course World serves as the hub for playing and sharing levels. Here, players can upload their own creations, download others' stages, and sort through courses by popularity, tags, or difficulty. Both traditional platforming stages and unconventional puzzle or endurance challenges can be created, making the variety of available levels nearly limitless. Multiplayer support allows cooperative or competitive play online, where players attempt to clear or race through levels together.

Progression in Story Mode rewards coins used to fund the castle's reconstruction, while Course World progression comes in the form of Maker Points earned by uploading levels and likes from other players. Leaderboards and rankings provide a measure of status for active creators.

Secondary features include an expanded set of course elements such as slopes, on-off switches, autoscroll options, and nighttime variations that alter stage behavior. Levels can also be chained together in Super Worlds, allowing creators to design multi-course campaigns with a world map. A wide range of customization tags helps players categorize their stages, from puzzle-solving to speedrunning.
