Read all about it! Future and Sony team up for new campaign to launch Resistance 2

**Future creates authentic 1950's style newspaper to support launch of new video game

02/12/08**

Future, the special-interest media group has teamed up with games giant Sony Computer Entertainment, to create an exclusive newspaper set in the alternative 1950s timeline of new Playstation 3 game Resistance 2.

A highly collectable and engaging product, the concept was created by Future360 & Future's in-house creative solutions team & to enlist gamers and film enthusiasts in ‘the resistance' with calls-to-action integrated into the editorial content of the newspaper.

Distributed throughout early December, the 8pp broadsheet newspaper engages with the readership across Future's games, films and technology titles, and will be inserted into 9 Future titles including Total Film, SFX, PlayStation Magazine 3, Official PlayStation Magazine and T3 with a total distribution of 550,000 copies.

Copies will also be distributed in branded dumpbins at cinemas around the country, and Sony will be using the striking creative as a cover-wrap in regional and local news papers.

Content of the newspaper includes reportage about the ‘Chimera' attack; a call to action from the President; history of the game (in the context of the Resistance 2 world); 1950s style faux advertising; letters, horoscope and crossword.

Phil Lynch, Product Marketing Manger for Sony Computer Entertainment said:

"A large part of our campaign objectives were to extend the reach and appeal of Resistance 2 to more than those who'd purchased Resistance: Fall of Man. With this in mind and coupled with the game's rich 1950s American twisted history backdrop, we partnered with Future in creating an engaging and relevant 8 page authentic newspaper of the time.

Future showed a great understanding of the game, the target audience and of course the medium. The newspaper fitted beautifully with the rest of our campaign and was relevant, timely and great value for money in terms of a media buy"

Poorvi Smith, Advertising Director for Future360 said:

"It would have been easy for us just to use our strength in the games market to promote this campaign. However, we recognised the opportunity to reach both hard core and casual gamers alike - our portfolio enabled us to target young men in the games, film and technology markets in an engaging and efficient manner."

Resistance 2 is a PS3-exclusive sci-fi first-person shooter and the sequel to the PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man. The game is set in an alternate history around the year 1950 where the alien Chimera species took over Russia and converted the humans into super-powered soldiers. In the first title the protagonist Sgt. Nathan Hale, part of a US Rangers task force, managed to stop the invasion in Britain, but the rest of Europe was left invaded.

In the sequel, the Chimera have reached the United States and threaten to invade it. Once again starring Nathan Hale, he is now part of the The Sentinels task force that captured him at the end of the first Resistance. Just like the other members who fight along with him he has been infected with the Chimeran virus, but is able to keep it under control using drugs while reaping the benefits of the powers.

Many of the weapons he can wield were already present in the first game (redesigned versions of the Bullseye and Auger for instance), as a mix of 1950s human technology and alien materials, but the arsenal is expanded with weaponry such as the Marksman and the HVAP Wraith mini gun. Unlike the first game there is limit to the amount of guns and grenades he can carry, and with no visible health system it can be replenished by seeking cover, a tactic also employed by Call of Duty 4.

Multiplayer is offered in two flavours: cooperative and competitive. In the cooperative mode players can choose between three character classes (Special Ops, Soldiers and Medics) and join seven other players as the Specter Team to battle through a story that parallels the main campaign. The enemies' strength is altered based on the players' skill. While playing, new attributes can be unlocked and new armour can be acquired. Unlike the first game, co-op for the singleplayer portion is not available. Competitive gameplay supports up to 60 players simultaneously with four main modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Core Control (Capture the Flag) and Skirmish. Both humans and Chimerans are available to play and in large battles players are split up in small squads to work towards objectives.
