Elden Ring: Nightreign is an action role-playing game and a cooperative spin-off of the 2022 game Elden Ring. It is set in a procedurally generated reimagining of Limgrave, renamed Limveld, which serves as the game's primary setting. Unlike the original title, Nightreign is structured as a roguelite with a focus on cooperative gameplay. Players form teams of three and embark on runs that span three in-game days. Over the course of each day, players explore the map, defeat enemies, acquire loot, and level up in preparation for a final boss encounter on the third day. The game features a shrinking zone mechanic, similar to those seen in battle royale games, which periodically constrains the playable area and adds time pressure to player decisions.
The game includes eight distinct player classes known as Nightfarers, each offering unique skills and abilities. These classes, including roles such as Wylder, Guardian, and Executor, are designed to encourage varied strategies and coordinated teamwork. Some classes introduce entirely new mechanics, such as grappling hooks or parry-focused combat, while others reinterpret traditional archetypes with unique twists. Each class also features an associated storyline, or “remembrance,†which provides character background and unlocks additional gameplay rewards through specific challenges.
While Nightreign can technically be played solo, the game is strongly oriented around cooperative play. Solo players face significant challenges due to balancing issues, including the inability to revive after death, limited defensive tools, and high enemy density designed for teams. The game does offer minor solo concessions, such as increased damage output and rare revival items, but overall the experience is notably more difficult and less forgiving when played alone.
Runs last approximately 45 minutes and are designed to compress the progression arc typical of a full RPG into a single session. As players complete objectives and defeat bosses, they earn relics—persistent upgrades that enhance future attempts. These relics provide a wide range of bonuses, though acquisition is largely randomized outside of a few fixed sources, such as class-specific objectives and shop purchases. This system introduces a long-term progression element common to roguelites.
Boss encounters are a central focus and feature a variety of new designs. Eight major “Nightlord†bosses serve as the final challenge of each run, with mechanics often inspired by MMORPG raid battles. These include multi-phase fights, team-based role assignments, and interruptible party-wide attacks. Some bosses are also drawn from previous FromSoftware titles.
The game includes several quality-of-life features aimed at streamlining gameplay. Leveling is simplified, with automatic stat increases based on class preferences. Weapon selection emphasizes readability, focusing on a few key attributes. There are also movement mechanics, including a new wall-climbing ability.
The game does not support crossplay and lacks matchmaking options for two-player teams. Communication tools are limited to a basic ping system, with no built-in voice chat.
