Out of money and out of luck you find yourself broken-hearted and on the verge of collapse. Your landlord's taken the key back, you can't finish your manuscript, and your beloved is marrying someone else. With no choice but to handle whatever life throws at you, you set out on the open road on a mission to win back the love of your life. The story from there to redemption is up to you. Can we be salvaged, or are there always sometimes monsters?
• Choice - A story-driven experience focusing on relationships and emotional bonds rather than traditional
RPG combat and adventuring. Indecision is your enemy and empathy is your weapon in a quest to earn one last chance to win back the love of your life.
• Circumstance - Choose from characters of different gender, race, and sexual preference and live through the common experiences and unique hardships of each based on your selection. NPCs may treat you differently based on your gender, race, or sexual preference opening and closing different paths along the way.
• Consequence - Each playthrough is filled with a staggering number of diverging paths that can be discovered through both overt actions and subtle choices in conversation. The journey you experience will be tailored to our personal ethical compass as your decisions both conscious and subconscious change your fate.
Always Sometimes Monsters is a game developed by Vagabond Dog.
Always Sometimes Monsters is a 2D top-down role-playing game. You control a failed writer for 30 days at the moment the rent is due with no money left and a publishing contract that does not go through as planned. At the same time a wedding invitation arrives from an ex the character broke up a year ago. Through a short sequence at a party prior to the events of the game, the main character (male or female) is selected from the guests there as well as the love interest (male or female) to tailor the game to the player's preferred gender, race and sexual preference. The game also opens with a sequence in the future where a contract killer who wants to leave the profession is confronted on the street.
The game starts in Dubtown, a city with shops, nightlife, working locations and many people to meet. The environment can be explored freely and there are many choices to influence the events. Money for instance can be stolen, earned through work, or risked through gambling or investing in sandwiches. People often offer opportunities with ethical consequences. When out of money, you can attempt to sleep at someone's house or just on a mattress outside. There are various objects to collect and items can be bought or sold at shops. There is a main narrative to the follow, but the game often offers different ways to approach it. Eventually various endings can be reached, and there are also many premature endings after specific choices. In those cases it is always possible to continue from a save point.
As with many RPG Maker games the character can be moved around and a single key is used to interact. Dialogues often have multiple choices. There is no voice-acting, but portraits of characters are shown through the conversations. There are some adult scenes and the game's product description carries that warning that it has content dealing with racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, mental health, sexual assault, child abuse, animal abuse, drug abuse, and suicide.
