When evil threatens the world, the world calls on Broforce - an under-funded, over-powered paramilitary organization dealing exclusively in excessive force. Brace your loins with up to four players to run ‘n' gun as dozens of different bros and eliminate the opposing terrorist forces that threaten our way of life. Broforce is a single-player and multiplayer cooperative run-and-gun platform game with side-scrolling action and fully destructible terrain. Players control a squad of “Bros,” exaggerated parodies of iconic action heroes from film, television, and comics, who are sent on missions across the globe to liberate territory from terrorists, aliens, and demonic forces. The objective of each mission is to rescue prisoners, eliminate enemy forces, and reach the extraction point.

Gameplay emphasizes fast-paced combat and chaotic destruction. Levels are built from destructible blocks, allowing players to carve paths through the environment, topple structures onto enemies, or accidentally destroy their own footing. Each “Bro” has a distinct primary weapon, a melee attack, and a special ability with limited uses. For example, some specialize in explosive weaponry, others wield firearms or melee weapons, and several feature unique gadgets such as flamethrowers or boomerangs. Hostages serve as both extra lives and unlock opportunities: rescuing enough prisoners unlocks new Bros, each randomly assigned at respawn.

Enemies range from lightly armed soldiers to heavy gunners, attack dogs, suicide bombers, and supernatural creatures. Boss battles occasionally occur, requiring players to dismantle massive war machines or alien threats. Because characters are swapped when lives are used, success often requires adapting quickly to the current Bro's strengths and weaknesses. Environmental hazards such as collapsing terrain, fire, or explosives further increase the challenge.

The game supports up to four players in local or online cooperative play, where teamwork can amplify destruction or create additional hazards if players are careless. A competitive “versus” mode is also included, pitting Bros against one another in destructible arenas. Beyond the core campaign, an in-game level editor allows players to design and share custom missions.

In 2023, the Broforce Forever update expanded the game with six new Bros, new campaign missions, and additional enemy types. This update also introduced balance adjustments and quality-of-life improvements.
