Dark Awake is a 2D fighting game with a Western fantasy theme. Players control teams of up to 3 characters in chaotic team battles; in addition to choosing characters, players can also pick items to use during a match. After picking one character and one item, players can choose between additional characters or additional items; they can choose up to four slots total, with any mix of items and characters. During battle, calling a character or using an item works like calling a striker character in The King of Fighters 2000 or Marvel vs. Capcom.
