Dragon Ball: Xenoverse is a single-player and multiplayer fighting role-playing game. The story takes place in a distorted Dragon Ball timeline where villains manipulate key battles of history for their own gain. To counter this threat, the Supreme Kai of Time summons a new warrior from the player's creation to serve as a member of the Time Patrol. The player's role is to enter these altered events, assist the series' heroes, and restore the proper flow of history. This narrative framework spans battles from the original Dragon Ball through Dragon Ball Z and beyond, offering alternate takes on familiar encounters.
Gameplay combines arena-based fighting with role-playing progression. Battles occur in large 3D environments where players can move freely in all directions, fly, and use melee combos, energy blasts, and signature abilities. Each character has a stamina and ki system: stamina fuels defensive maneuvers like dodges and guard breaks, while ki powers super moves such as energy waves or teleport strikes. Combat emphasizes both aggressive offense and reactive counters, with aerial mobility being central to most engagements.
Character creation is a core feature. Players select from five races (Saiyan, Earthling, Namekian, Majin, and Frieza's clan) each with distinct strengths and weaknesses. The created Time Patroller can be customized with appearance options, costumes, and a wide range of techniques learned throughout play. Skills are acquired by training under classic Dragon Ball characters as mentors, by purchasing from shops, or as drops from missions.
Progression is tied to experience points earned in battles, which increase attributes such as health, stamina, basic attacks, and ki power. Equipment and clothing also grant statistical changes, allowing further specialization. Multiple builds can be developed to favor close combat, ranged energy use, or balanced approaches.
Outside of story missions, players interact with Toki Toki City, a hub where they can access quests, shops, and training. Parallel Quests serve as optional missions with alternative scenarios and conditions, often rewarding rare items or techniques. The hub also functions as the gateway to multiplayer, where players can team up or compete in online battles. Other systems include ranked and unranked multiplayer matches, and co-operative missions.
