InviZimals: The Lost Kingdom is a 3D platformer in the InviZimals series. All the previous entries were collectible creature games for handheld systems using a camera and augmented reality letting players capture monsters in the environment. Capturing creatures is still an important element, but now using more traditional gameplay mechanics. The player controls the young boy Hiro who steals a crystal from the British Museum in London to scientists. They use it to open a portal letting Hiro travel into an animated world where the InviZimals are attacked by a robot army.
Hiro gets to explore different environment and can capture up to 16 InviZimals, one for each environment, significantly less compared to the hundreds of the earlier games. He can then directly take control of the InviZimal forms, using their unique abilities to overcome obstacles in the environment and fight enemies. Z sparks can be collected as a currency to upgrade the InviZimals. They grow into a colt and eventually into a max. Controls are limited to jumping, attacking and a general action. As the game is geared towards younger players, the correct InviZimal for the environment can be selected with a button press. A certain amount of Z sparks is often needed to keep progressing and open doors. There are also many quick time events.
The game was released simultaneously with Invizimals: The Alliance and uses cross-platform elements with that title. InviZimals from the PS3 version can be shared. Additionally it is possible to fight against a local Vita player in the battle mode. The two players can also choose to team up and fight another team online.
