MotorStorm: RC is the fifth game in the racing series. This entry does away with the large off-road vehicles and replaces them with radio-controlled models in the same setting. The camera system is also completely different, as it shows a viewpoint from high in the air, almost top-down, and it sways left or right based on the upcoming corners, alternating the view from behind and in front of the vehicle. That way the racing and gameplay resemble Super Off Road or the Micro Machine games more rather than it is a continuation of the previous installments.
Racing tracks are based on courses from the previous games with four areas called Monument Valley, Pacific Rift, Arctic Edge and Apocalypse. They do not resemble the original locales completely, but they are inspired by it and toned down. The fast acceleration allows the cars to drift through corners, launching them over ramps and bumping opponents out of the way. There are eight main car classes such as Buggy, Racing Truck or Big Rig. Cars compete in different types of events, such as regular races (Race), overtaking challenges (Pursuit), time trials against three other cars (Hot Lap) or drifting competitions where powerslides are rewarded (Drift) to earn medals that unlock new tracks, challenges and vehicles. There are 48 challenges in total. Players can also fool around in the Playground, an open environment where basketball or football can be played. Ghosts of human opponents can be retrieved in-game through the leaderboards to beat their times and challenges can be sent through social media and in-game communication. Ghosts can be called up at any moment and they can be mixed. A race can for instance have a ghost for the personal best time, the best time of a friend and the one for the time to beat to earn additional medals. Each ghost has a different racing line colour to signify its type. The PS3 version only has local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players. Except for the exchange of ghosts no multiplayer options are available for the PS Vita version.
The game features asynchronous cross-platform play, not as races against another opponent on another platform, but with the ability to pick up progress on the other system. Having played the PS3 version for instance, the game can be continued right away on the PS Vita version after having synced it with an online connection. Players who buy the game receive a copy for both platforms. The game was released exclusively as a download through PSN and at a much lower price point than the previous games in the series.
