In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario, aided by a sentient hat named Cappy, journeys through various kingdoms to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser's forced marriage plans. The story starts with Bowser kidnapping Peach, leading Mario to team up with Cappy in the Cap Kingdom to battle the Broodals and confront Bowser on the Moon. The game's setting spans 14 diverse kingdoms, such as the Cap Kingdom and New Donk City, designed for open-world exploration.

Players explore to collect Power Moons, essential for powering the Odyssey airship. Cappy's capture ability lets Mario possess enemies and objects, such as flying as a Bullet Bill, while moves like triple-jumping and cap-throwing add depth to traversal and combat. The game includes a health system where the player can collect items known as 'Life-Up Hearts', which grant three extra hit points; upon dying, the cost to respawn is up to ten coins. While most of the game is 3D, some areas feature 2D side-scrolling sections.

The game offers a cooperative multiplayer mode where the second player takes control of Cappy, as well as VR support via Nintendo Labo, a photo mode for creative shots, and integration with real-world Amiibo figurines, which unlock hints and costumes inside the game.
