Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter centered on counter-terrorist operations. Rather than focusing on a single-player campaign, the game emphasizes team-based competitive and cooperative scenarios where players assume the roles of specialized operators drawn from international counter-terrorism units.
The core gameplay is structured around asymmetrical matches that pit attackers against defenders. Attackers attempt to breach fortified positions using explosives, drones, and specialized equipment, while defenders prepare barricades, deploy traps, and use surveillance systems to hold their ground. Environmental destruction plays a central role: walls, floors, ceilings, and barricades can be breached or reinforced, creating new sightlines and tactical options during every match.
At launch, twenty operators were available, each tied to a specific unit such as the SAS, Spetsnaz, GIGN, FBI SWAT, or GSG 9. Operators possess unique abilities and loadouts that define their role in combat, from Sledge’s breaching hammer to Thermite’s exothermic charges or Smoke’s remote gas grenades. Players select an operator before each round, with team composition and synergy influencing strategy.
The game includes both player-versus-player and player-versus-environment modes. In PvP, small squads face off in round-based matches, with objectives such as hostage rescue, bomb defusal, or securing an area. PvE introduces Terrorist Hunt, where players either solo or in co-op confront AI-controlled enemies, including the White Masks, a fictional global terrorist organization. These scenarios provide training opportunities while extending the tactical gameplay beyond competitive play.
Progression is tied to Renown, an in-game currency earned by playing matches, completing challenges, and leveling up. Renown is used to unlock new operators, weapon attachments, and cosmetic customization. Additional operators and maps have been introduced in post-release updates, gradually expanding the roster and content pool.
Secondary systems include the Drivatar-inspired matchmaking and ranking modes, spectator tools for esports viewing, and in-game tutorials called Situations that introduce mechanics in scripted missions.
In June 2025, the game was rebranded as Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege X and shifted to a free-to-play model. This version expanded the number of maps, added a refreshed anti-cheat system, and introduced the Dual Front game mode.
