Wicked fun. It's hard to describe Metal Slug Anthology any other way. You don't have to be a tried-and-true fan of the Metal Slug series to go after this game, just a fan of fast-paced, challenging games. The Anthology comes loaded with seven arcade-perfect Metal Slug titles, and the only thing missing from the arcade experience, outside of a roll of quarters, is a joystick. However, SNK Playmore gave Metal Slug Anthology gamers a choice of six different control schemes to choose from. The most basic control scheme is handled through the classic NES configuration. You turn the Wii Remote controller on its side, move with the Control Pad, jump with the 1 Button and fire with the 2 Button. When you shake the controller, your character throws grenades. You might be surprised at how effective merely shaking the controller is as a button replacement. Not only do you feel the intensity of the game, but you can keep firing and moving without missing a beat.If you're into using a different control scheme, you can choose from five other options. Aside from just plugging in a Nintendo GameCube controller, Metal Slug Anthology's control options include Wii Remote Tilt, Arcade, Nunchuk Only and Nunchuk Control Stick. With Wii Remote Tilt, you hold the remote on its side and tilt it left or right, whichever direction you want to travel. The 1 and 2 Buttons are for bombs and the gun, and pushing Up on the Control Pad makes your soldier jump. If you select the Nunchuk Only configuration, you move your character with the Control Stick, shoot with the Z Button, jump with C and shake the Nunchuk to throw bombs. The Nunchuck Control Stick configuration lets you control movement through the Control Stick and firing, jumping and throwing bombs with the Remote. In this instance, the Wii Remote's B Button is used to fire, A is jump and shaking the Remote throws bombs. Finally, the Arcade controls calls for you to hold the Wii Remote vertically, as if it were a joystick. Whatever direction you move the Wii Remote translates into directional moving and aiming on-screen. You then use the Nunchuk for firing, jumping and throwing bombs.Just standing on cool arcade graphics and awesome gameplay alone would have made for a solid game, but the Metal Slug Anthology crew really went the extra mile to give gamers all sorts of unique, creative control options.Bottom LineIt's the ultimate collection for shooter/arcade fans. It's obvious that SNK Playmore went the extra mile to make this a special compilation.
