Described as a "boldly exerimental concept" by reviewers, Young Merlin is one of the highest rated fantasy action adventure games available and marks Westwood Studios' triumphant arrival on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
In Young Merlin, we took a familiar character, Merlin the Magician, and asked the question: What was he like as a kid? Before the spells and the princesses and King Arthur? How did he get his start? We then developed a storyline, some characters, and a wild assortment of magical items and spells, which all adds up to quite an enjoyable romp.
Some of our most creative energy has been showcased in this game. Meet the Thunder Pig, a huge, revolting porker. Bloop, a disgusting blob of jelly. Prepare yourself to encounter flying eyeballs, dynamite-throwing dwarves, exploding pigs, trolls, spiders, piranhas, sharks, huge termites, and a giant, fireball-spewing orange dragon named Cinder. There's fighting to be done, puzzles to solve, mazes to negotiate. The game is constantly changing, offering new challenges in every world.
By utilizing 16 megabits, we were able to create a much more fully realized adventure than other games on the market can offer. The soundtrack alone takes four megabits, more space than many of our competitors spend on their entire game cartridges. The characters are large and detailed, and the landscapes lush and full.
As Game Player magazine noted, Young Merlin "is part action, part RPG, part puzzler...Young Merlin looks great and plays even better."
After trying to rescue a drowning young woman, a young magician named Merlin is drawn into a fantasy world which is threatened by the evil Shadow King. Naturally, it is his job to save this world and also to rescue the aforementioned woman, who has been kidnapped by the Shadow King.
Young Merlin is an action game with puzzle-solving elements. The hero has to fight enemies using spells that are gathered during the progress of the game, as well as solve puzzles, interact with the game's inhabitants, and use several objects. What sets this title apart from similar games is the fact that there is no text in the entire game; instead, icons are used to represent conversations. Furthermore, the game uses passwords instead of a battery to record the player's progress.
