The Expendables 2 Videogame is a third-person shooter and a tie-in for the 2012 The Expendables 2 action movie. The game's story is set prior to the events of the movie as four of the Expendables are hired to kidnap a Chinese billionaire. All of the missions are completed by the four mercenaries working together. The available ones are Barney Ross, Hale Caesar, Gunnar Jensen and Yin Yang. The game can be played cooperatively with up to four players both locally and online. When playing alone the other ones are controlled through the AI, but is possible to switch characters at any moment.
The game consists of four chapters, each with their own setting, further split up into different levels. The environment includes the Balkan countryside, the Somalian desert, the Kowloon industrial docks and the Burmese jungle. There are two difficulty levels and also a number of challenges unlocked gradually next to the main campaign. The game uses a zoomed out, non-fixed third-person view with cinematic angles that cannot be controlled by the player. During the over-the-top action the characters are controlled as in a twin stick shooter for movement, rolling and shooting. It is possible to switch weapons and pick up new ones from fallen enemies. Next to regular guns there are knives, machetes, grenades and bazookas. When up close it is possible to grab opponents or perform a signature kill finisher, different for each character. Characters can also revive each other. Many parts of the environment are destructible and some parts can be used for over. Sometimes vehicular combat is possible by riding motorbikes or driving 4x4s. There are some on-rails sections played from a first-person view, shooting enemy on the ground from a helicopter or an airplane.
Most of the missions consist of advancing through the environment and eliminating many waves of enemies. Sometimes specific types of objectives need to be destroyed with a time limit. Characters gain experience during missions and have access to specific weapons and skills. Experience can be used to upgrade weapons, for instance to make the reloading time shorter.
