The Last of Us: Part I is a single-player action game with survival and stealth elements. Set in the United States twenty years after a fungal outbreak devastated humanity, it follows Joel, a smuggler hardened by loss, who is tasked with escorting a teenage girl named Ellie across the country. Ellie is immune to the infection that has destroyed civilization, and their journey forces them to confront hostile survivors and infected creatures alike. The narrative explores their relationship as they traverse ruined cities, quarantine zones, and wilderness while searching for a group known as the Fireflies.
Gameplay is presented in third person, combining exploration, stealth, and combat. Players control Joel for most of the game, navigating open-ended environments filled with enemies and supplies. Stealth is often required, as ammunition and resources are limited. Players can choke enemies silently, craft makeshift weapons, and take cover behind objects during firefights. The infected enemies come in several forms, from recently turned Runners to Clickers that rely on echolocation, requiring different strategies to handle. Ellie accompanies Joel throughout most of the journey, assisting in combat by throwing objects at enemies or calling out danger. She also provides narrative context through dialogue during exploration. Certain sequences involve puzzle-like traversal, such as boosting Ellie to reach ladders or using objects to cross water.
Combat emphasizes improvisation and resource management. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, rifles, and bows, which can be upgraded using parts found in the environment. Melee combat uses blunt objects such as pipes or baseball bats that degrade with use. Crafting is a core mechanic, allowing the creation of items such as Molotov cocktails, shivs, and health kits from scavenged materials. Players must balance limited resources between offensive and defensive needs.
Progression is tied to upgrades. Supplements found throughout the world allow Joel to enhance abilities such as maximum health, crafting speed, and weapon sway. Workbenches provide opportunities to improve weapon performance, such as reload speed, capacity, or stability. Exploration often rewards players with hidden supplies, collectibles, and environmental storytelling that expand the game's setting.
The Last of Us: Part I is a rebuilt version of the original title with updated visuals, enhanced lighting, and revised character models. The core content remains unchanged, including the main story and the standalone prequel expansion Left Behind, which follows Ellie in events that occur before and during the main narrative.
